Asphalt emulsion sealcoat is made of the same binding material keeps the aggregate in asphalt pavement. Over time the sun and weather degrade the binder contained in the top layer of asphalt causing it to become grey and slowly crack. Applying a coat of asphalt emulsion rejuvenates this top layer of bitumen protecting the asphalt and gives it a fresh new look.
Before asphalt emulsion is applied, the asphalt surface is thoroughly cleaned of dust and debris. Once the surface is clean sealer is pumped onto the driveway and evenly spread using broom like brushes. This method of application using a brush typically leaves a thicker layer than sealer applied by spraying. The brushing technique also allows full coverage even in the tightest nooks without any overspray getting where it shouldn't be.
Ideal Asphalt uses asphalt emulsion sealer consisting of emulsified bitumen which is bitumen, the product that binds asphalt pavement together, suspended in water so that it can be applied to a surface. Once the water evaporates the bitumen will bind with the existing asphalt surface. Unfortunately emulsion or water based sealer has less penetration than an oil based asphalt sealer, but it still has many benefits the main being it's environmental friendliness. Oil based sealers release VOCs into the environment and many countries have begun banning their use. In addition to the release of VOCs some drawbacks of oil based sealer include it's lengthy drying period and distinct long lasting odor. On the other hand asphalt emulsion sealers dry very rapidly and don't release any odors or breathing hazards.
